SPHRG members find history at Delaware's Coin Beach

This monday President Orvis, Woody and new member Tony made a special trip after this weekends nor'easter and hurricane Kyle to search Delaware's coin beach, famous for coins found from the wrecks of the Faithful Steward and Three Brothers which sunk just offshore circa 1785.  Orvis and Woody met Tony at Indian River Inlet bright and early around 8:00am and geared up.  After crossing over to the beach and walking down about 1/2 mile I got a call on the walkie talkie from Orvis that Tony had scored his first King George copper.  About an hour later I called Orvis and reported that I had also found one. I also found an unusual item. A three inch long porcupine quill with one end cut like a quill pen and the other capped with copper with a hole in it.  I thought it might have been an Indian artifact like an earring.  My wife thought it might have been a pen and someone else suggested it might have been used to bleed patients on the ship which was done frequently during the 18th century.  Orvis found some odd bits of metal and other people detecting on the beach that they had found some coins.  With our find's a total of six coppers were found sunday and monday from those we interviewed.  The weather was cloudy and nice and we left around 5:30pm.
